PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for enhancing the ease of usability at panning, tilting, and normal monitoring of a camera, reducing the recording memory capacity, and saving the power. SOLUTION: The camera includes a main lens; a screen position variable means for varying a screen position; a photographed data storage means for storing photographed image data; a contrast detection means for detecting the contrast of an imaging area, corresponding to the screen position set by the screen position variable means; and a storage means for storing a contrast detection preparatory process for detecting the contrast, in advance, separately from the actual photographing and data in the contrast preparatory process. The camera carries out photographing so that there is a prescribed difference between the contrast evaluation value, or the AF evaluation value obtained in the contrast detection preparatory process and a contrast evaluation value, or an AF evaluation value obtained in the actual photographic operation.
