A data communication method using sound waves and a terminal for performing the same are provided to improve communication efficiency by preventing interference between terminals and hacking and reducing an error rate during sound wave communication, and substantially use sound wave communication. One or more mapping tables in which respective characteristic values of sound waves and digital data are mapped according to certain mapping table generating and changing information. A particular mapping table to be used for terminals participating in sound wave communication is selected. Transmission digital data is changed to sound waves according to the selected mapping table. The sound waves are emitted through a speaker unit. The emitted sound waves are received through a microphone unit. The received sound waves are converted into digital data by using the mapping table.
