PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a liquid crystal display device perform substantial narrow-view-angle display without using a liquid crystal element for view angle limitation which is difficult to manufacture. SOLUTION: First selective image data selected out of source image data for displaying an image as data to be written to respective pixels in a plurality of areas selected in a checkered pattern out of areas obtained by dividing a screen area of the liquid crystal display element into a plurality of numbers in two directions and second selective image data selected as data to be written to respective pixels in second areas other than the first areas are written to a plurality of pixels of the liquid crystal display element. The liquid crystal display element is irradiated with first illumination light having directivity slanted to one direction to a normal direction of the liquid crystal display element from a sheet light source in synchronism with the writing of the first selective image data and also irradiated with second illumination light having directivity slanted in the opposite direction to the one direction to the normal direction from the sheet light source in synchronism with the writing of the second selective image data.
