Method and device for occupant detection and classification on a vehicle seat

The method involves controlling an actuator such as electric motor, permitting vertical displacements (m1, m2) of a seat (1) with predefined power profile, where the power profile presents a variable characteristics representative of effort applied by the actuator for displacing the seat. The starting of movement of the actuator is detected, and a power value of the characteristics is measured. The measured value is compared to a set of predetermined values for determining the presence of an occupant and classifying the occupant based on their weight. An independent claim is also included for a device for detection and classification of an occupant on vehicle seat.
