The invention relates to a method for determining and monitoring the level (4) of a medium (5) in a container (2) by a propagation-time measuring method consisting in transmitting high frequency transmission signals (S) in a predefined polarisation plane (11) of an electric field by means of the first launching element (13) of an antenna (9), wherein said polarisation plane (11) of the transmission signal (S) electric field is oriented substantially at a plane angle (.part.) approximately of 45~ with respect to a plane (NL) which contains a propagation vector (ks) of the transmission signal (S) and a normal to the surface (N) of the container (2) internal wall (3) or a normal to the surface (N) of a parasitic element (10) in the container (2), and in determining the level (4) with the aid of a reflection signal (R) re-injected into the first launching element (13). The aim of said invention is to deliver a method for reducing parasitic signals in the reflection signal and to improve the measuring accuracy and availability of free beam measuring devices used for determining the medium level by the propagation-time measuring method.
