PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup device for accessing a multi-layer optical disk having a small distance between respective recording layers, wherein focus error signals from the respective recording layers do not interfere with one another, and occurrence of offset is suppressed even if an assembling error or the like exists. SOLUTION: A light receiving element 7 receiving return light from the optical disk has main light receiving regions 7a, 7b and auxiliary light receiving regions 7e, 7f. When output signals of the light receiving regions 7a, 7b, 7e and 7f are assumed to be Sa, Sb, Se and Sf, a focus error signal is calculated by (Sa+Sf)-(Sb+Se). Areas of the auxiliary light receiving regions 7e, 7f are formed smaller than areas of the main light receiving regions 7a, 7b. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
