A device and a method for controlling sound of an image display device are provided to distinguish human voice signals and musical signals from each other for carrying out sound control even when no information is included in the voice signals. A device for controlling sound of an image display device includes a storing part(190) for storing various wave forms for receiving sound signals. A sound signal analyzing part(200) determines whether sound signals separated by a DEMUX(120) has sound information. A control part(180) controls the sound signals to be automatically converted into corresponding sound if the sound information is included as a result of the analysis. In the other case, different sound is supported by the control part by distinguishing that the input sound signals is voice or sound. A sound signal processing part(130) outputs sound optimized according to sound set by a user in the received sound information or wave form analysis result according to a control signal of the control part.
