PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing an image defect (faulty density, wormhole-like state and roughness or the like) by always enhancing the mechanical adhesive force of a toner to an intermediate transfer body so that images of next and succeeding colors may not be retransferred, eliminating the ruggedness of the toner layer of the intermediate transfer body so that a transfer condition for the images of the next and succeeding colors may be always stable, and performing stable primary transfer even in a color image so that a toner image on the intermediate transfer body may not get irregular. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, the color image is formed by primarily transferring the toner image on an image carrier 7a to the intermediate transfer body 5 by a primary transfer part, repeating such primary transfer of a plurality of color toner images and superposing the plurality of color toner images on the intermediate transfer body 5, and then collectively secondarily transferring the plurality of color toner images to transfer material 9. The image forming apparatus is provided with a toner layer pressing member 11a for pressing a toner layer on the intermediate transfer body 5 at a more upstream position in the rotating direction of the intermediate transfer body than the primary transfer part.
