PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly and certainly perform monitoring of a visual field in a wide range from a vehicle by switching a visual line direction of a photographing means using a light adjustment mirror. SOLUTION: The periphery monitoring device is constituted such that the present state of the vehicle 2 is detected, the state of the light adjustment mirror 6 positioned in the visual line direction of a camera 3 is varied in the transparent state (see Fig. 2 (A)) and in the mirror state (see Fig. 2 (B)) by electrochemical action based on the detection result and the visual line direction of the camera is switched.
