A crate made of wood with metal connecting and strengthening members has all parts detachable and comprises a base 11 with skids 20, 21 and members 16 of F-shape crosssection, sides 12 having angle members 25, a cover 14, Fig. 8, having attached members 40 of E-shape cross-section and end panels 13. The crate is assembled by entering the flanges 26 of the lower angle members 25 into channels 19 of the F-shaped members. Each channel 19 is tapered inwardly from its mouth so that the flange 26 is gripped when banged into position, Fig. 3. Flattened C-shaped members 30 attached to the walls 12 receive T-shaped members 34 attached to the end panels 13 and the ends of further metal T-shaped members 50, which reinforce the cover 14, are received by metal sockets 51. The cover is faced in position by horizontal sliding of channels 42 of the E-shaped members into engagement with the flanges 26 of the upper angles 25. Metal stops 36 may also be provided to abut against the inside surfaces of the ends 13 and blocks of wood 28 may be provided to facilitate gripping by hooks &c. during transportation. The sides may be reinforced by metal bars 29.</p> |
