PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner capable of restraining wear on a sliding surface between a cylinder chamber and a plunger. SOLUTION: In the chain tensioner, a register ring 13 is assembled in a ring receiving groove 12 formed on an inner periphery of an opening of the cylinder chamber 2, and a plurality of circumferential grooves 14 fastened by the register ring 13 are axially formed on the outer periphery of the plunger 3 at even intervals. The register ring 13 is fitted on the first circumferential groove 14 located on a pointed head side of the plunger 3, and a pointed head side of an outer peripheral cylinder surface 3a at a front side of the first circumferential groove 14 is supported by an inner peripheral cylinder surface 2a at a front side of the ring receiving groove 12 of the cylinder chamber 2 while the register ring 13 is held between a connecting surface 14b of the first circumferential groove 14 and a locking surface 12b of the ring receiving groove 12. Generation of inclination is prevented on the plunger 3 while the chain repeating forward and backward movements of the plunger 3 is in a tension adjusting state, and generation of wear on the sliding surface between the plunger 3 and cylinder chamber 2 is restrained.
