A weather measurement device for determining the speed in a first direction of hydrometeors in precipitation, the device comprising: a light source 2 for projecting in a second direction, substantially orthogonal to the first direction, a plurality of light sheets 16 each of which has a separation in the first direction with respect to an adjacent light sheet; a light detector 20 or detecting light 5 scattered from a measurement volume 12 occupied by the plurality of light sheets; and a memory 42 for recording the output of the detector whereby sequential scattering events occurring when a hydrometeor traverses the measurement volume in the first direction are recorded in the memory for calculating the speed, in the first direction, of the hydrometeor. |
