The device for the maintaining of the set track of a motor vehicle during the exchange of a track rod joint (4, 16) comprises a base component (6) with an opening to accommodate a hinge bolt of the new track rod link, and a stop element (54) which is movable parallel to the track rod (48) and lockable in optional movement positions. At least a part of the opening has a conical boundary peripheral. An independent claim is included for a method for the maintaining of the set track of a motor vehicle during the exchange of a track rod joint in which before a disassembly of the track rod joint a measurement (A) is taken by an adjustable gauge (2) between a stationary stop point (70) on the track rod joint and a hinge bolt of the track rod joint and transferring this measurement during the fitting of the new track rod joint.
