An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine comprising partially oxidizing a secondary fuel in a pre-oxidation unit with an oxidizer and then is completely oxidized in the oxidation catalyst in a catalyst heating operation for heating an oxidation catalyst of the exhaust system in a cold start of the internal combustion engine.
