<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a transfer explosion and scatter, arising in a high resistance transfer roller, and image defects, such as a transfer memory arising in a low resistance transfer roller, when an ATVC (Active Transfer Voltage Control) is performed in an image forming apparatus carrying an environment detecting means. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with a transfer device and a fixing device for making the recording material on which an unfixed toner image is formed pass through a fixation nip part formed by a fixing member and a pressure member in a press contact state and thermally fixing the unfixed toner image on the recording material. The image forming apparatus is also provided with the environment detecting means detecting at least either one of temperature or humidity. The current flowing to the transfer device while not in passage of paper is measured and the transfer voltage is so controlled to attain the prescribed current. The print voltage to be applied to the transfer device during the passage of the paper is determined based on the voltage generated at this time.
