The invention relates to a system and method for determining a position of an object in an area such as an amusement park, where a need for easy, rapid and precise determining of a position of the object is present. This need is fulfilled and other advantages are provided by a positioning system comprising tags attached to the object and transmitting to antennas, a server connected to the antennas, wherein the server is provided with a gateway for providing communication from the server to at least one portable data transmitting and receiving means, said communication being provided upon request from the portable data transmitting and receiving means to the server, and the server being capable of communicating to the at least one portable data transmitting and receiving means a position of the at least one tag being correlated to a mapping of the predetermined area.
