An illumination unit includes a plurality of light source units 110, 120, 130, configured to emit light L 11 , L 21 , L 31 of different wavelengths, and a prism arrangement 200 configured to combine the light L 11 , L 21 , L 31 emitted from the light source units 110, 120, 130 so that it proceeds along a common optical path. The prism arrangement 200 includes a two triangular prisms 210, 230 each having an outer surface 215, 235 that trans 11 , L 21 , L 31 , depending on its wavelength. The illumination unit may be used to illuminate an image forming device, such as an liquid crystal display (LCD) panel or digital micromirror device (DMD). |
