PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an error situation handling method and a device which recover an impending failure such as a track squeeze failure in a magnetic disk drive, in a mass storage system. SOLUTION: The impending failure is recovered by detecting an impeding error, for example, by rewriting on an influenced track. In many cases, recovery is performed, when the failure is detected and original data can be still read. In another case, although data cannot be read from the disk concerned, if the disk is a part of a RAID system, or a part of an other system mounting a fault-tolerant method of a higher level, lost data can be recovered by these methods, and then the track squeeze failure is recovered using recovered data.
