An ion detector for a mass spectrometer, comprising: a mask/shield 10 provided between a first microchannel plate device 2a and a second micro-channel plate device 2b; and a plurality of collection anodes 5 and 6. The mask/shield is arranged to at least partially block, attenuate or divert electrons emitted from said first MCP device 2a, thereby preventing ion arrival events causing a cloud of secondary electrons to be emitted from the second microchannel plate 2b which would illuminate two collection anodes 5 and 6 at the same time. The mask 10 also prevents emitted electron clouds from varying significantly in intensity. The multiple collection anodes may be of different areas, sizes or shapes. |
