Methods and compositions related to treating, controlling or inhibiting acne vulgaris by reducing or inhibiting growth of Proprionibacterium acnes employing a compound having the following structure: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R₁, R₂, R₃ and R₄ are selected from a group consisting of a carboxyl group, methyl group, ethyl group, propyl group, isopropyl group, butyl group, isobutyl group, secondary butyl group, tertiary butyl group, pentyl group, isopentyl group, neopentyl group, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and hydrogen.
