A BRAKE ASSEMBLY

A brake assembly (1) to apply a braking force to a brake drum (5). The assembly (1) including: a pair of brake shoes (10) to engage the drum (5) to apply the force; a pair of arms (15), each arm (15) being attached to a respective one of the shoes (10), each arm (15) being movable between a brake operative position applying the force and a brake inoperative position not applying a braking force to the drum (5). Biasing means (20) urges each arm (15) to the operative position thereof. A solenoid (25) includes a plunger (30), the solenoid (25) being operable to move the plunger (30) between a first position and a second position. A pair of levers (34, 35), each lever (34, 35) being operatively associated with the plunger (30) and a respective one of the arms (15), and movable between a first position and a second position. A release mechanism (40) operatively associated with one of the levers (34, 35) to release one of the levers (34, 35) for movement to the second position thereof. The plunger (30) when in the ferst position thereof locates the levers (34, 35) in the ferst position thereof so that the arms (15) are located in the inoperative positions thereof except if the release mechanism (40) has been operated to release one of the levers (34, 35) in which case one of the levers (34, 35) is released to move to the second position thereof so that the associated arm moves to the operative position thereof. The plunger (30) when in the second position pennits the levers (34, 35) to move to the second position thereof so that the anass (15) move to the operative position thereof.
