A second electrode layer (9) uses a spacer to link to sheathing (10) electrically/mechanically. A fuel cell (1) has a tubular substrate layer (TSL) (4) in a radial direction (2) starting from a longitudinal center line (3). The TSL has inner (5) and outer(6) surfaces. On its outer surface there is a first electrode layer (7), e.g. an anode layer, on which there is an electrolyte layer (8). A second electrode layer (9) lies on the electrolyte layer. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) A bundle of single tubular fuel cells each in direct/mechanical contact with each adjacent fuel cell; and (B) a method for operating a fuel cell.
