CHOPPED CARBON FIBER PREFORM PROCESSING METHOD USING COAL TAR PITCH BINDER

A procedure for forming a chopped fiber preform using a coal tar pitch binde r and the product thereof by providing removable inside and outside sleeves (1 6, 18) on a mold pan (12), and distributing chopped carbon fibers (20) througho ut the mold pan (12) and sleeves (16, 18) to a specified depth. The fibers (20) are pressed and a vacuum is pulled prior to introducing the coal tar pitch binder, and additional pressure is provided to form the desired product.
