PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine capable of generating a mechanical output such as a rotating force by the use of compressed high pressure gas. SOLUTION: The engine has a high pressure gas tank 7 storing high pressure gas, a piston 3 displaced upon receipt of the pressure of the high pressure gas supplied from the tank 7 and forming an expansion chamber 4 for expanding the gas, and a crank shaft converting the displacement of the piston 3 into rotary motion. The engine is designed to burn fuel in the expansion chamber 4 when the volume of the chamber is expanded by the gas supplied thereto. At this time, the piston 3 is displaced by receiving mainly the gas pressure as in startup, and the fuel combustion is mostly consumed in preventing a decrease in gas temperature in the chamber 4.
