The hand-operated work-table assembly of a drilling or milling machine comprises a base 10, Figs. 1, 2, supporting a pair of parallel rods 12 on which linear bearings 13 are mounted, a saddle 14 slidable on the rods and supporting a further pair of rods 16 having linear bearings 15, a work-table 17 slidable on rods 16, and a template and follower 18, 19 for locating the table in the required position for drilling, or for guiding the table during milling. The template has the required outer profile 27 for milling, and holes 26 located at the required position for drilling. Weights 23 are clamped to table 17 when carrying out a milling operation so as to increase its mass, and reduce tool chatter, and the table is moved by handles 20 and 50. The table assembly is clamped during a drilling operation with the weights removed, by pivoting handle 20, Fig. 5, so that a cam 42 actuates the switch 41 of a solenoid 37, Fig. 4. The latter actuates toggles 38 which urge a plunger 36 against rods 16, so as to clamp the latter against studs 33. Each of the toggles also pivots a lever 35, so that the end 40 urges a wedge 31, Fig. 3, upwardly so as to clamp a rod 12. Dashpots 44, Fig. 5, are provided for the saddle 14, and table 17, and a disc 46, Fig. 1, is clamped to the spindle so as to prevent vibrations. |
