PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which the excavating location, rolling, attitude change, such as the inclination etc., of a vertical shaft excavator can be surveyed easily and accurately while the excavator excavates a vertical shaft by directing its cutter head downward. SOLUTION: Two guide pipes 2 and 3 are laid in advance from the mouth T1 of the vertical shaft to the vertical shaft excavator 1 and the lower end sections of the pipes 2 and 3 are fixed to the excavator 1 in parallel with each other. Then a measuring instrument 4 is moved to the bottom end A of either one (2 or 3) of the guide pipes 2 and 3 opened at prescribed positions of the mouth T1 through the pipe (2 or 3) by hanging down the instrument 4 into the pipe (2 or 3) and the coordinates (X<SB>1</SB>, Y<SB>1</SB>, and Z<SB>1</SB>) of the lower end A are found by gradually raising the instrument 4 by using the coordinates of the mouth T1 as reference coordinates (X<SB>0</SB>, Y<SB>0</SB>, and Z<SB>0</SB>). In addition, the coordinates (X<SB>2</SB>, Y<SB>2</SB>, and Z<SB>2</SB>and X<SB>3</SB>, Y<SB>3</SB>, and Z<SB>3</SB>) of the lower end B of the other guide pipe (3 or 2) and a point C at a fixed height from the lower end B in the pipe (3 or 2) are found similarly.
