Inside and/or outside a battery's casing there are heater elements, which maintain a connection to the current-bearing connectors of the battery and, as a result, are fed by the battery. The heater elements link to thermostats that switch the heater elements on if they fall short of a preset temperature and off if they exceed another preset temperature.
