PURPOSE: A method of controlling luminance by positions and an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) using the method are provided to improve maximum luminance of a part of a screen. CONSTITUTION: A method of controlling luminance by positions includes a step of electrically controlling the phase of light by positions on a screen to differently control the quantity of light by the positions on the screen, and a step of making the maximum luminance of a specific region of the screen higher than the maximum luminance of other regions using the controlled light and displaying an image. The specific region is designated by a user. The specific region is decided according to the kind of the image. A motion picture is displayed in the specific region. An LCD includes a light source(3) emitting light, a light controller(2) for electrically controlling the phase of the light emitted from the light source by positions on a screen, and an LCD panel(1) for making the maximum luminance of a specific region higher than the maximum luminance of other regions using the light input from the light controller and displaying an image.
