PURPOSE: A video thumbnail and a method for generating the video thumbnail are provided to allow a user to know the contents of a video file without opening the entire video file through a video thumbnail including an animated sequence of a frame extracted from frame sequences of the video file. CONSTITUTION: A video thumbnail includes a relatively short animated video thumbnail with low resolution, which is used as an icon of a digital video file. The video thumbnail includes a plurality of digital video frames of the digital video file. A sequence or series of the digital video frames is selected to easily remind a user of the point of the digital video file. The video thumbnail is automatically executed and serves as a pointer for the file and a desirable point in the file.
