PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of detecting the discrimination position on an optical fiber by which the discrimination of effective region after drawing is facilitated. SOLUTION: The method of detecting the discrimination position on the optical fiber includes a process for forming a marking groove M having a depth capable of being discriminated after drawing to mark on a part of the outer circumference of a glass preform 60P before drawing, a process for detecting the marking groove of the glass preform after drawing and discriminating the effective region from the non-effective region based on the position of the marking groove and a process for cutting the non-effective region based on the discrimination result.
