A transmitter coil (20) emits an electromagnetic signal. First (30) and second (40) receiver coils pick up secondary signals given off by likely metal objects. Flat areas of the first and second receiver coils form first (32) and second (42) treading areas of a person's first and second shoes respectively. An Independent claim is also included for a method for detecting metal objects like weapons in shoes.
