<p>A record carrier of a removable type has an information plane (12) with bit locations that constitute at least one track. The presence or absence of electro-magnetic material at the information plane represents a value of a bit location. A storage device has a head (41) with a sensor element (42,54,56) that is sensitive to the presence or absence of said electro-magnetic material within a near-field working distance. The record carrier has a scanning surface (18) that is substantially flat for scanning the track within the near-field working distance via the head.
