PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To disclose a compound which has a surface similar to the surface presented by one of five distinct lateral domains of CD4, and to disclose a method of treating individuals suspected of suffering from or susceptible to conditions characterized by an undesired immune response comprising administering to the individual at least one compound which mimics a portion of the lateral surface of the CD4 glycoprotein. SOLUTION: The compound comprises 20 or less amino acids and comprises at least an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of: Ser-Gln-Lys, Ala-Ser-Gln, Asp-Gln-Lys, Gln-Lys-Glu, Lys-Glu-Glu, SEQ ID NO:30, Asn-Gln-Lys, Pro-Arg-Gly, Lys-Gln Ser, Gln-Ser-Ala, Lys-Gln-Asp, Glu-Lys-Gln, Glu-Glu-Lys, SEQ ID NO:66, Lys-Gln-Asn, and Gly-Arg-Pro; whereby said compound is capable of inhibiting T cell proliferation.
