PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital recording and reproducing apparatus in which a new program is prevented from being recorded while being overwritten on a recorded program that a user does not view when recording a program while using a function for repeated recording of a program to be periodically broadcasted in a determined time zone. SOLUTION: A reproduction status of a program recorded by programming repeated recording is stored and when the recorded program is reproduced, a program which is programmed to be recorded is recorded while being overwritten on the recorded program but when the recorded program is not reproduced, separately from the recording area, a new recording area is secured to record the program which is programmed to be recorded.
