The present invention relates to multifunctional devices (20) for performing suction, irrigation, manipulation, and gas injection or extraction at an internal site in a subject, and more particularly to enlargeable multifunctional devices (20) for performing such functions while avoiding obstruction during conventional and endoscopic surgery. The present invention provides the ability to deploy and retract a guard (30) (e.g. enlargeable section) to create an area (38) free of tissue interference.
