PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface acoustic wave device which suppresses spurious radiation due in a higher-order lateral oscillation mode and realizes high attenuation in the suppressed zone. SOLUTION: The surface acoustic wave device has a pair of confronting comb electrodes having many electrode fingers arranged in a row on one principal surface of a piezoelectric substrate 1 in such a way that the electrode fingers of one electrode are partially located, in the arrangement direction of the electrode fingers, between the electrode fingers of the other electrode. The electrode fingers of the pair of comb electrodes are set in such a way that the electrode length in the region where the electrode fingers of both electrode are placed interdigitally each other is approximately fixed and the electrode length in the interdigital region may be different individually or by the plurality of the electrode fingers.
