PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide ferromagnetic and metallic powders having superior electromagnetic conversion characteristics and storage stability and to provide a magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The major component of the ferromagnetic and metallic powder is iron having an oxidized film on the surface. Crystallite sizes of magnetite system crystals or iron spinel crystals in the oxidized film are set to 2.0 to 4.0nm and the crystallite sizes of hematite crystals in the powder are made to 4.0 to 10nm.
