PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably determine the presence or absence of ink in a simple structure at low cost. SOLUTION: When the presence or absence of the ink in an ink tank of a recorder having a recording head for performing the recording by ejecting ink on a recording medium from each of a plurality of nozzles is determined, a preliminary ejection operation for ejecting the ink from the recording head is performed at a portion outside of a recording portion, an ink drop ejected from the recording head by the preliminary ejection operation is detected, and then the presence or absence of the ink in the ink tank is determined based on the detected result. When the number of nozzles of the black ink is different from the number of each color inks of yellow, magenta and cyan, an ejection cycle of the black ink for which the number of nozzles is large is made to be elongated and an ejection cycle of the color ink for which the number of nozzles is small is made to be shortened.
