<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording and reproducing device which is provided with a mode to wind a magnetic tape and a mode not to wind the magnetic tape around a rotary head drum in a fast forward/rewinding operation, setting the travel speed of the magnetic tape in the latter higher than the travel speed in the mode of the former so that a forward/rewinding time is shortened and is free of the problem of damage to the magnetic tape. <P>SOLUTION: The magnetic recording and reproducing device is provided with the first take-up mode in a state of winding the magnetic tape 13 around the rotary head drum 1 and the second take-up mode of not winding the magnetic tape and is set with the travel speed of the magnetic tape 13 in the second take-up mode higher than the travel speed in the first take-up mode.
