When performing a radio communication with another communication device, an inquiry message to find other communication devices existing around is radio-transmitted while changing the communication reach distance in several stages. A response message for the inquiry message is received. For each of the communication devices as transmission origins of the response messages, a reception state or reception frequency information is held for each of the communication reach distances of the response messages. According to the information on the reception state or reception frequency of the response messages held, a communication device to be connected for radio communication is selected. Thus, when performing a short-distance radio communication, it is possible to provide a communication service appropriately between required devices.
