Card reader device has a slit-type receiving space for a card, and read-write units for card storage elements, such as memory chip and magnetic strip. An inserted card is positioned relative to the read and write units by means of a motor driven card drive that pulls in or ejects the card. Said drive comprises a card carrying sliding carriage that is driven in and out by the motor and a spindle mechanism.
