PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video recording and reproducing apparatus provided with an HDD 4, a VCR 9, and a system controller 13, capable of dubbing a program recorded on the HDD 4 onto a cassette tape 8 and for quickly reproducing a desired program among many dubbed programs. SOLUTION: When receiving a command of reproducing a program recorded on the cassette tape 8, the system controller 13 of the video recording and reproducing apparatus of this invention starts searching for the program by using the cassette tape 8 for an object, reads and reproduces the program from the HDD 4 for a period until the program is found out, and reads and reproduces the rest of the program from the cassette tape 8 after the program is found out.
