The pulper, to break down used paper materials into fibers, has a horizontal drum (1) which is mostly without perforations, and a drive to rotate the drum. The used paper materials are fed into the drum at the closure plate (4) at one end side, and the fibers are taken off at the other end side. A displacement body (2) is within the drum, and does not rotate with it, with an outer wall at the rising motion of the drum with a curvature of at least one quarter of the circumference. Guides (7) at the displacement body are pitched at an angle to the drum circumference. A working channel (3) for the paper material is formed between the displacement body and the inner drum wall. The curvature of the displacement body is structured so that the working channel is wider at the downstream side of the body where the material enters it, than at the upstream section after the displacement body.
