<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for improving an image quickly, capable of adjusting improvement of the whole image based on a material content of the image. <P>SOLUTION: In this method for improving image characteristic according to the material content, the image comprises pixels, and a reliability map corresponding spatially to the pixels is generated. The reliability map includes a reliability value showing likelihood wherein each pixel shows a specific material like a skin. An improvement parameter is generated from the reliability map.
