PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in an IPS display mode in which the liquid crystal responds speedily and also the color tone variation accompanied by fluctuation of a driving voltage is suppressed. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device comprising; a 1st substrate; a 2nd substrate arranged to be faced to the 1st substrate; a liquid crystal layer held between the 1st and 2nd substrates; a plurality of scanning lines arranged on the 1st substrate; signal lines arranged crossing the scanning lines on the 1st substrate; pixels formed corresponding to the areas enclosed by the scanning lines and the signal lines; pixel electrodes which are arranged on the 1st substrate and correspond to the signal lines; common electrodes which are arranged on the 1st substrate and correspond to the pixel electrodes; 1st active elements arranged at the intersections of the scanning lines and the signal lines and electrically connected to the signal lines and the pixel electrodes; and an insulating film arranged on the 1st substrate, is provided with ruggedness for varying the liquid crystal layer in thickness at least either on the 1st or 2nd substrate in a light transmission area in a same pixel.
