PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide non-cyano-type liquid crystal mixture free from the crystallization and the formation of smectic phase even at a low temperature, having a wide nematic temperature range, highly positive dielectric anisotropy and high birefringence and usable for an active matrix liquid crystal display having high performance. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal mixture contains at least one fluorinated chloroterphenyl of formula I: R-E-Cl (R is a <=15C nonsubstituted or halogenated alkyl or alkenyl; one or more CH2 groups in the group R may be independently substituted with the group of formula 2 in a state free from directly bonded oxygen atoms; E is an enantiomer of formula 3 provided that at least one of the benzene rings is further fluorinated.).
