PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus in which abnormal imaging operation is monitored when an image is formed by scanning a latent image carrier with a laser beam. SOLUTION: When a digital copy machine enters a monitor timing, an abnormality monitoring section 50 monitors the timing of a forced lighting signal for lighting a laser light source forcibly in order to acquire a sync detection signal by detecting a laser beam through a photodetector 26, and the output timing of the sync detection signal from the photodetector 26 thus monitoring abnormal imaging operation. Consequently, the cause of abnormality can be determined appropriately upon occurrence of abnormal imaging operation. For example, a decision can be made quickly and inexpensively that a writing clock or a main scanning counter is abnormal when the forced lighting signal and the sync detection signal are abnormal, or that the r.p.m. of a polygon motor is abnormal when only the sync detection signal is abnormal.
