PURPOSE: Provided are refractories containing fine carbon materials obtained from thermal treating liquid pitch instead of conventional graphite. The resultant refractories have high strength, and improved thermal shock resistance and melting resistance. CONSTITUTION: The carbon-contained refractories are produced by adding carbon(0.5micrometer-0.2mm), obtained from thermal treating liquid pitch among amorphous carbon at 310-1350deg.C, to 1-20pts.wt. of refractory materials such as Al2O3, MgO, ZrO2, spinel and mullite. Also, less than 7pts.wt. of antioxydants such as carbides(SiC, B4C), borides(ZrB2, ZrB6), Al, Al-Si, Al-Mg, and frit is optionally added to prevent oxidation of carbon.
