A piston with a cooling duct under the crown is made with the duct open to the bottom and with the lower part of the piston ring skirt missing. After machining the groove profile it is sealed by welding a cover ring to the bottom of the groove, with the weld on the outside of the piston skirt. The cover ring includes the bottom part of the piston ring skirt. The inside edge of the cover has a stepped lip which aligns against the inner edge of the piston.
