PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chuck opening and closing device in simple constitution capable of certainly holding and releasing a work by opening and closing a chuck and the chuck itself. SOLUTION: This chuck opening and closing device has a push arrow 160 to move the chuck 130 in the axial C direction of a main spindle 101 by pushing it forward, a taper surface 111 to open and close the chuck 130 by being engaged with a taper surface 131 of the front end side when the chuck 130 moves forward, a taper surface 165 provided on a front end of the push arrow 160, to be engaged with a taper surface 132 on the rear end side of the chuck 130 and to open and close a holding part of the rear end side at the time of pushing the chuck 130 forward and moving means 132, 165 to forcibly move the chuck 130 backward when the push arrow 160 retreats.
